Soil Studios was founded in 2020 in Hong Kong. Grounded in the principles of conscious design, we specialise in residential and hospitality interiors. Much like the natural world relies on soil to grow and flourish, our studio aims to cultivate meaningful spaces to enrich clients’ lives. Rich and tactile, balanced and deeply detailed, simple and sophisticated, our interiors have a timeless appeal. By harnessing sustainable design solutions and eco-friendly materials, we aim to have a positive impact on our environment.
Our talented team includes designers, renderers, draftsmen, project managers and contractors. With more than a decade of experience between us, we provide integrated services from developing design concepts to final construction and management of projects. Efficient and flexible, our team is committed to meeting clients’ needs. Going forward, our ultimate goal is to expand the studio to offer purpose-driven solutions for green living including eco-conscious fashion, food and travel.
Co-founder
OJ MIU
OJ Miu is an award-wining interior designer and the founder of Soil Studios. She has more than a decade of experience working with prestigious design and architectural studios across Hong Kong. Passionate about eco-conscious design, Miu has built a reputation for her problem-solving skills and highly creative approach.
Miu graduated at the top of her class from Hong Kong’s esteemed Caritas Bianchi College of Careers where she specialised in Interior Architecture and 3D Spatial Design. She received several accolades during her student years including the Hong Kong Interior Design Association (HKIDA) Scholarship for Excellence in Interior Architecture and Perspective Magazine’s 2007 Best Interior Design Student of the Year award.
As a young designer, Miu joined the famed British design firm Foster + Partners where she worked on notable projects such as Cathay Pacific’s First Class Lounge at the Hong Kong International Airport. She went on to spend 9 years at the respected Hong Kong-based firm BTR (HK) Ltd where she worked as an associate. Miu’s portfolio spans from cosy café interiors to monumental designs for residential developments and hotels. She has worked with a range of clients including major developers such as Sun Hung Kai Properties, New World Development and Kerry Properties.
Alex Ho
Co-founder
Alex Ho is a multi-disciplinary designer who co-founded Soil Studios. Over the course of his celebrated 17-year international career, he has honed his skills in both product and interior design. Known for bringing a fresh approach to projects, Alex has a nuanced understanding of diverse cultures and the needs of different clients.
After gaining a foundation in industrial design at the Rhode Island School of Design, he studied product design at Central Saint Martins in London where he graduated in 2003 with honours. He began his career in London working in technical design before moving to Milan where he worked as a graphic designer and editor at the renowned publication Designboom. He later took on the role of product and interior designer at
Luca Trazzi Studio, an architectural practice based in Milan, where he worked with a roster of esteemed European clients such as illy caffé.
Upon returning to Hong Kong, he began his career at the award-winning firm Steve Leung Design Group. He went on to join various leading firms where he gained experience working on private residential, commercial and hospitality projects. His impressive portfolio has won him number accolades and recognition both in Asia and the United States. In 2009, he joined BTR (HK) Ltd where he worked as an associate for 11 years. Known to leave an indelible impression, his portfolio spans from bespoke furniture and fittings to stylish restaurants and opulent hotel interiors.
